Interesting snippit on
the Fiona Pender missing person/murder
case!
- It is now a year since the heavily
pregnant Fiona Pender (25)
disappeared from the flat in
Tullamore which she shared with her
boyfriend, John Thompson. The latest
edition of the Offaly Express
contains a lengthy interview with Mr
Thompson in which he criticises the
gardai for treating him and his
family as the prime suspects,
confirming that it was himself, his
three sisters and his father who were
held for questioning for 12 hours in
April. He also accused the gardai of
not taking sufficient action in the
case. The local garda inspector
rejected the criticism, saying that
countless searches had been made and
that he would not be deterred from
interviewing people. Mr Thompson also
hit out at rumours that his family
were against the relationship because
he was a Protestant and she was a
Catholic. Ms Pender was last seen at
6:00am on August 23, 1996, when Mr
Thompson left their flat to go to
work on the family farm.

- Drug Halts Progress
of 'Mad Cow Disease' in UK Man
Fri Sep 26, 1:47 PM
By Alex Richardson
BELFAST (Reuters) - An experimental treatment
given to a Northern Irish teenager has
halted the progress of brain damage
caused by the human form of mad cow
disease, medical experts studying his
case said on Friday.
Jonathan
Simms, 19, from Belfast, is the first
person to have pentosan polysulphate
(PPS) injected into his brain in an
attempt to slow the damage caused by
variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (news - web sites) (vCJD).
"Here
we have a kid who had gone down and down
and down, now he's put all the weight he
had lost back on, his heart rate is back
up to normal," said Stephen Dealler,
a consultant microbiologist at the Royal
Lancaster Infirmary in England.
"It
is one case, and you can't go round
saying we have the answer, but it has
justified large amounts of work to go
ahead to find out what was really going
on, to find out why the drug appeared to
have such an effect and which way to go
from here."
He was
speaking after experts from several
countries gathered at a Belfast hotel for
a case conference organized by the
teenager's father Don Simms to discuss
whether PPS has been effective in
stabilizing Jonathan and prolonging his
life.
Although
Jonathan remains confined to bed with
limited ability to move or interact with
those around him, Don Simms said he had
seen "small but significant"
improvements since winning the right to
give his son the experimental treatment.
"He's
not dead, that's the most significant
thing. His swallow has increased, so that
he can deal with his own secretion of
saliva, which is a big thing for CJD
sufferers," he told Reuters.
"He's
living 10 months longer than the average,
I was told he had a year by two experts,
in two different countries."
There is
no cure for vCJD, which is fatal and has
been linked to eating meat from cattle
infected with Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy (news - web sites) (BSE (news - web sites)), also known as
mad cow disease.
LEGAL
BATTLE
Doctors
began giving Jonathan the drug, commonly
used to treat cystitis, after his family
won a legal battle last December. Health
officials needed court permission as the
treatment had not been tested on humans
and the disease had left Jonathan
incapable of deciding for himself.
"I'm
not a salesman for PPS, that's entirely
up to other families," said Simms,
when asked if he thought the drug should
be made available to other sufferers.
"But
the information we have now -- no one had
that -- and I don't want those other
families, if they wish to have the
compound, to have to jump the same
hurdles as we did."
Doctors
and scientists at Friday's conference
said more research was needed to confirm
PPS as a treatment for vCJD, but believed
it should be given to more sufferers.
"I am
absolutely convinced, as a scientist,
that if Jonathan had been treated earlier
we would not see Jonathan in as poor a
state as he is now," said Chris
Pomfrett, a lecturer in neurophysiology
at Manchester University, in northern
England.
"The
delay that happened with Jonathan must
not be allowed to happen to others."
Jonathan's
family doctor, Mark McClean, said he was
frustrated the drug had not been
administered when his family first
requested it in March 2002.
"Given
the choice between certain death in a
matter of weeks or months, and treatment,
albeit experimental, which could have
even a one-in-a-million chance of halting
the disease, there's no choice, I would
choose the treatment," he said.
"In
our study, of one, admittedly, against
all the experts advice we proved it has
been safe... and it has been effective in
halting the disease, and perhaps
improving his state of mind."
Britain
destroyed 3.7 million cattle in the 1980s
and 1990s because of BSE. There have been
nearly 120 confirmed or probable deaths
in Britain from vCJD.

It seems that the American newspaper managed

Loads of missing kids in Gov

jurisdiction!
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- After three
months of investigation, law enforcement
officials still cannot find nearly 90
children who disappeared while in the
care of Florida's embattled child-welfare
agency.
Investigators said that the vast
majority of the 88 children are runaways
and that many are alive and well. But the
children have not been seen in person and
therefore cannot be considered found,
according to a report on the
investigation.
Gov. Jeb Bush called the investigation
a success and said a better system is now
in place to find missing children.
"This is a good briefing for
Christmas. There's a lot of good
news," Bush said Tuesday.
The report said state agencies have
improved communication and adopted a new
system of reporting missing children and
notifying each other when the youngsters
are found.

Is there truth to these allegations or
was a smear campaign?
British MP Paedophile Allegations
Hidden From Melbourne Indymedia
adhok (melbimc voluteer),
29.06.2003 16:05
There seem to be some
retractions due while a number of
unanswered questions remain regarding
an article recently posted (anonymously)
on Melbourne Indymedia entitled
Blair Involved in Pedophile Ring
blackmailed to support Iraq Attack.
It now seems probable that some of the
allegations made in the article may stem
from a smear campaign orchestrated by
British secret services.
The article, written by Mike James
from the online journal Propaganda
Matrix, made three main assertions: one;
that two members of Tony Blairs
inner government were being investigated
over child pornography charges, two; that
this information was used by elements
within the USA to blackmail the British
Government into supporting the war on
Iraq, and three; that the convicted
Dunblane massacre murderer and suspected
paedophile, Thomas Hamilton had
complicated connections to the recently
retired Secretry General of NATO, Lord
George Robertson.
Michael Keaney, an online commentator and
Finnish based economist, was heavily
quoted in the article. He contacted
Melbourne Indymedia a few days ago asking
that the article be removed, because he
believes the article to be misleading,
and that some of its assertions are
demonstrably false.
On March 11 of this year, Londons
Independent newspaper seemed to be
putting to rest earlier allegations made
by Scotlands Sunday Herald on
January 19th that the police
investigation into child pornography
known as Operation Ore (which was also
responsible for the arrest of Pete
Townsend) had implicated two prominent
British Labour politicians. The
Independent said that, earlier
reports that suggested two MPs were on
the list now seem wrong.
The problem was the earlier Sunday Herald
article had sounded quite authorative:
The Sunday Herald has also had
confirmed by a very senior source in
British intelligence that at least one
high-profile former Labour Cabinet
minister is among Operation Ore suspects.
The Sunday Herald has been given the
politician's name but, for legal reasons,
can not identify the person.
There are still unconfirmed rumours
that another senior Labour politician is
among the suspects. The intelligence
officer said that a 'rolling' Cabinet
committee had been set up to work out how
to deal with the potentially ruinous
fall-out for both Tony Blair and the
government if arrests occur.
http://www.sundayherald.com/30813
Michael Keaney used the above assertions
in January (before the retraction) to
speculate on an email list as to who
indeed the culprits might be. These
musings were quoted in the Propaganda
Matrix article. However, following the
publication of the Independent article in
March, Keaney says it is quite possible
that Sunday Herald readers, and even
journalists, may have been 'duped,' and
that the intelligence leak may have been
"deliberately calculated to smear
prominent politicians."
If that is indeed the case,
wrote Keaney, there is still a
serious case to answer. What is going on
inside UK intelligence? Why are stories
deliberately calculated to smear
prominent politicians making their way
into the press? Have we returned to the
1970s? Did the 1970s ever go away --
i.e., have the security services
continued their fun and games and proxy
wars in the news media? If so, to what
end?
I asked Michael Keaney why it was he
believed this was more likely a case of a
smear campaign than a cover-up:
There is a long tradition of smear
in the British press, in which different
factions of the intelligence community
conduct proxy wars and in which there is
inevitable collateral damage. Now I am
hardly one to defend the likes of Peter
Mandelson, and it may well be that he or
another former cabinet colleague is on a
list of suspects somewhere, but the
manner in which this story has been
treated is disturbing for reasons
relating to the use of newspaper
journalists by intelligence officers as
urinals (as E.P. Thompson aptly described
Chapman Pincher). By any stretch of the
imagination all of this is scandalous,
but the real scandal, given all that we
know at present, is that unsubstantiated
allegations of this kind, complete with
the utmost reassurance from anonymous
intelligence sources, make it into the
newspapers in order for inquiring minds
like mine to connect the dots and draw
the conclusion. In doing that it is quite
possible that I was duped. Or maybe not.
Whatever, I think we are on much stronger
ground if we focus on the smear job
itself, asking for further substantiation
of what are incredibly serious
allegations that have miraculously
appeared and then equally miraculously
been swept under the carpet. In other
words, we have to try to read between the
lines in this wilderness of mirrors, to
mix metaphors. The alternative is that we
risk losing credibility because we have
been led into a trap designed to make us
reach conclusions which are thereafter
demonstrably falsifiable (which is not to
say false).
Another person quoted in the Propaganda
Matrix article, William Palfreman, was
also moved to withdraw the comments he
made years earlier in an internet chat
room. Palfreman now believes the
suggestion that Roberston and Hamilton
were jointly involved in a paedophile
ring was merely a rumour he may have
naively been involved in
starting. Despite the inference in the PM
article, Michael Keaney made clear that
he had not made comments regarding any
connections to the Dunblane massacre in
his writings on Robertson.
The Propaganda Matrix article referred to
Palfreman as a correspondent of
Keaney, however both assert that
they were not known to each other until
the article was published.
http://lists.econ.utah.edu/pipermail/a-list/2003-May/025572.html
Rumours regarding Lord Robertsons
connection to the Hamilton, the Dunblane
killer, were born out of the suspicion
surrounding the largely unprecedented use
of a 100 year secrecy act imposed on some
documents seen by the inquiry into the
Dunblane killings. Robertson reportedly
withdrew his son from a club run by
Hamilton amid concern about its
militaristic nature in 1983.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/guardianpolitics/story/0,3605,895056,00.html
In March, Lord Robertson threatened to
sue the Sunday Herald over particular
allegations made on the newspapers
online public forum regarding his
involvement with the Hamilton. The paper
removed the allegations from its
un-policed forum within half
an hour of being contacted by Robertson.
As an international figure Robertson may
have been able to file defamation cases
against the paper in several countries,
sending the paper into financial ruin.
Although it may be coincidence, Robertson
announced he would step down from his
position as NATO Secretary General four
days after the original article appeared
in the paper.

A

The
congregation of the Christ Community
Church in Alamogordo in southern New
Mexico heard an anti-Harry Potter
sermon in which Pastor Jack Brock
claimed the character taught children
to take up wizardry.
"Behind
that innocent face is the power of
satanic darkness," he said.
"Harry Potter is the devil and
he is destroying people."
The
theme of the books - in which Potter
attends a wizard's school and battles
beasts and other wizards - has been
attacked by some for attracting
children to dark magic.
But
most of the millions of fans of the
books - the first of which has been
turned into a hit film - have
shrugged aside those arguments and
embraced the stories as harmless,
fantastical entertainment.
The
anti-Potter sermon was followed by
the night-time book burning, which
Pastor Brock said was part of a drive
for Christians to get rid of items
that prevent them from communicating
with God.
Pastor Brock said
he had never read any of the four
Potter novels - but had researched
their contents.
Several hundred
people formed a counter-demonstration
across the street to protest at the
burning.
"Burning books
leads to ignorance and that's why I'm
standing out here," said Vicky
O'Reilly, a resident of Alamogordo.
"My son loves Harry

Some waved signs -
including one reading "Hitler -

Others wore pointed

K Rowling has

her books turn children onto

"I have met

I've read these books because now I

in an earlier statement.
A number of schools

- Woman Dies in
Accident at Burning Man
(Probably named
after the celebration of the pagan
Celtic festival of the Wickerman!)
By DON THOMPSON,
Associated Press Writer
BLACK ROCK DESERT, Nev. - A woman riding
an "art car" at the
counterculture Burning Man festival
died when she accidentally fell under
the vehicle's wheels, authorities
said.
The
death of Katherine Lampman on
Saturday was the most serious in a
series of accidents at the weeklong
huge desert revel, where thousands of
people gather each year in a
celebration of art, performance and
individuality.
At
least five people were taken to area
hospitals after two plane crashes at
the festival's temporary airstrip,
and a truck bringing 30,000 pounds of
ice to the remote site rolled over,
slightly injuring one person,
officials said Saturday.
Lampman,
21, of Belmont, Calif., was killed
about 3 a.m. when she tried to get
off the "art car," which is
similar to a parade float, said Jamie
Thompson, a spokesman for the Bureau
of Land Management (news - web sites).
Four
people were injured Friday night when
their small plane crashed as it
attempted to land at the festival's
airstrip, about 120 miles north of
Reno.
The
victims were flown to Washoe Medical
Center in Reno, where they were later
listed in critical condition.
Also
Friday, another small plane crashed
at the airstrip while attempting to
take off, authorities said. One
person involved in that wreck was
taken to the hospital with back
injuries and two other people
sustained minor injuries, officials
said.
The
names of the plane crash victims were
not available.
Both
crashes, which involved Beechcraft
BE-35 airplanes, were under
investigation by the FAA (news - web sites) and the
National Transportation Safety Board
(news - web sites).
The
weeklong festival ended Saturday
night with the torching of a
70-foot-high wooden effigy of a man,
the colorful ceremony for which the
festival is named.
