Murder victim's mum
beaten up - 'This is rubbing salt in

18 November 2003
A GRIEVING mother from Ballyclare
today revealed that she was brutally
beaten up by thugs only a week after
her son was shot dead by the UVF.
Mavis Wilson, mother of John
Allen, believes she was targeted
because she spoke out against those
who murdered her son and because of
her refusal to bow to "bully boy
tactics".
Mrs Wilson suffered head, arm and
stomach injuries following the attack
which happened just yards from her
home.
Police have confirmed they are
investigating a confrontation outside
Mrs Wilson's Erskine Park home in the
early hours of Sunday morning and
have appealed for witnesses.
John Allen (31) was shot dead just
over a week ago in the Rashee Park
flat he shared with his brother. He
was shot twice in the head.
His mother Mavis was the first to
speak out following the murder,
describing her son as a "gentle
giant" and condemning the UVF.
The Belfast Telegraph has learnt
that the incident at the weekend was
prompted after a UVF mural in the
Erskine estate was covered with
paint.
Mrs Wilson said: "After the
mural was sprayed with paint there
was a car arrived later on with three
men in it; I went out to talk to them
because I wanted to confront them and
get some answers about what happened
to John.
"One of the men cursed at me
and when I went up to the car he got
out and punched and kicked me. It was
just bully boy tactics to try and get
me to shut up.
"I know who the men are and I
have told the police who they are.
After I reported the incident the
police told me to go to my GP and he
said I have injured my arm and
stomach. I also have a black eye.
"There is no doubt this is
connected with John's death and with
the fact that I spoke out against it
and because I hate
paramilitaries."
Mrs Wilson added: "I have
been badly shaken up by this and it
is just rubbing salt in the wounds
after John was killed."
A PSNI spokesman said:
"Police in Newtownabbey are
investigating a confrontation
believed to have occurred in Erskine
Park at around 4am on Sunday morning.
We are appealing for witnesses."
Over 1,000 people turned out for
John Allen's funeral last week where
the Rev George Moore said he had been
gunned down by "evil cowardly
men".

By David Gordon

17 November 2003
PUP leader David Ervine today
retracted an allegation that a UVF
murder victim was a convicted drug
dealer.Mr Ervine made the claim last
week against Raymond McCord, the
22-year-old former RAF man beaten to
death in 1997.The comment was made
last week during an election phone-in
on BBC Radio Ulster's Talkback show.A
statement read out by presenter David
Dunseith on today's programme said:
"The PSNI have told us that they
have no record of Raymond McCord
having been convicted of any
drugs-related offences."Mr
Ervine now accepts that his statement
on this programme was
incorrect."We do regret the
distress caused to the family of Mr
McCord by this comment." Mr
McCord's father, also called Raymond,
is standing for the Assembly in north
Belfast as an independent candidate.
e publicly challenged the PUP today
to a live TV debate on UVF murders.
Raymond McCord Jnr had been facing a
cannabis possession charge when he
was killed. His father has maintained
that the murder was carried out to
cover up a UVF chief's involvement in
drug dealing. He also claims this
senior paramilitary has been a
long-standing police informer. Mr
McCord Snr has been repeatedly warned
by police about his personal safety.
He said today that he had been
alerted on Saturday evening about a
fresh UVF plot to kill him.
"Police told me that a call had
been made to a Belfast newsroom that
I would be shot that night," he
added. Mr McCord's police informer
allegation is being investigated by
Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan.

tonights Pat Kenny Show on RTE. 14/11/03 on
Ireland's numerous missing people.

JoJo Dollard
- missing Halloween 1995
The Kenny Show had in the
audience many relatives of the best known of
Irelands missing people, these included Mary Phelan
(sister of JoJo Dollard), Josephine Pender
(mother of Fiona Pender), Alice Cairns (
mother of Phillip Cairns), the sister of Eva
Brennan and numerous friends and relations of
missing, deceased and murdered persons.
My immediate impression was
this: the same old repetition of the events
surrounding the individual cases of Irelands
missing people! Pat Kenny, like all other
Irish TV presenters, offered no new
solutions, explanations or hope for the
suffering relations and friends of the
missing! This program was a repetition of TV
programs on the missing televised 6-9 years
ago and the overall impression was a no-hoper
and a wringing of hands, never to be solved!
I predict that, if the
Irish public dont soon wise up, in 10
years time RTE will be
producing the same type of programs on the
missing with the same message of no hope!
Mary Phelan spoke with
Kenny and tried pitifully to express her
discontent with the way the Garda
investigated JoJo's case but got a cool
response from Kenny because he had heard it
all before and he wouldnt entertain any
criticism of the all-holy and above-suspicion
Garda! Mary, with her "friend" TD
John McGuinness, were calling (for the last 5
years) for a new Garda unit to specifically
investigate missing persons cases, but after
all these years, no such unit has been set up
and I predict it never will be!
When is Mary and the rest
going to realise, their "friends"
and "advisors" are stringing them
along, just hoping that they will give up all
hope of finding their loved ones or hope for
justice!
I have to say, even though
I empathise with the relations of the
missing, I felt a frustration with many of
them because they have not the capacity to
understand the worldwide extent of the issue
of missing persons! Naive and narrow-minded
people are being played like puppets and the
sorry and pathetic thing is - they dont know
who the puppeteers are!
I personally have no doubts
that RTE are doing a good job in covering up
all information relating the witchcraft and
ritual murders where it involves members of
establishments, whether it be in Ireland or
in other countries! RTE censored all mention
of witchcraft in the recent coverage in
Northern Ireland press and TV of the 1973
murder of Brian McDermott, which the RUC
admits could involve ritual murder! The
Belfast Telegraph clearly describes the
possible witchcraft connections in Brians
murder!
If only these sorry
individuals would search the internet and see
whats happening in other countries such as
Belgium, where the issue of missing persons
and ritual murder has been exposed!
See the article immediately
below this one!
It exposes the involvement
of the Belgium establishment (police, judges,
politicians, EU Commissioner, and even
Belgium Royalty)in group ritual murders -

our world grinds incessantly against
those of other worlds and dimensions,
producing manifestations and powerful

- Leap
Castle
-- Over 400 years ago in what is now
known as the "Bloody
Chapel" a shocking murder
occurred. Leap Castle was then a
stronghold of the O'Carroll family,
powerful Irish Princes, Chieftains of
the area.
In 1532, on the death of the
O'Carroll Chieftain, a fierce rivalry
for the leadership erupted within the
family. The bitter fight for power
turned brother against brother. One
of the brothers was a priest. The
O'Carroll priest was holding mass for
a group of his family (in what is now
called the "Bloody
Chapel"). While chanting the
holy rites, his rival brother burst
into the chapel plunging his sword
into his brother. Fatally wounding
him, the butchered priest fell across
the altar and died in front of his
family.
The heinous act of brother killing
brother and the blasphemy of a sacred
mass cut short by such an evil event
sent an echo of misery ringing
throughout the castle.
Another source of evil was found at
Leap Castle that may have compounded
and nurtured the sprit of the
elemental. A hidden ubliet (a
dungeon) was found off the bloody
chapel. It was a small room with a
drop floor. Those who were forgotten
within this room suffered
unimaginable pain and misery until
their death. Prisoners would be
pushed into the room to fall through
the floor and land on a spike eight
feet below. If you were not lucky
enough to die quickly on the spike,
you died of starvation in an odorless
room while the aroma of food and the
sounds of merriment drifted up from
the rooms below. A narrow window
would let you watch those who came
and went in freedom from the castle.
Around c.1900 workmen who where hired
to clean out the ubliet made a
hideous discovery, human skeletons
laid piled on top of each other. It
took three full cart loads to remove
all of the bones. Among the bones
workmen found a pocket watch made in
the 1840's. It is not certain if the
dungeon was still in use then.
Because of its extremely bloody
history Leap Castle has always had a
reputation of being haunted, a
reputation so strong local people
avoided it at night. Completely
gutted by fire, Leap Castle was
boarded up and it's gates were pad
locked for over 70 years. Locals have
described seeing the windows at the
top of the castle "light up for
a few seconds as if many candles were
brought into the room" late at
night. The castle laid in ruin for
years.
Shortly after Leap's dungeons
gruesome discovery, a psychic
disturbance may have caused the
emergence of the elemental spirit. In
1659 ownership of Leap Castle passed
in marriage from the O'Carroll family
to an English family, the Darbys. The
Darby family turned Leap into their
family home, with improvements and
additions and landscaped gardens . In
the late 19th century descendants
Johanthan and Mildred Darby were
looking forward to raising their
family here. The occult was the
fashion of the day, and Mildred Darby
did some innocent dabbling, despite
the castle's history and reputation
for being haunted. Mildred's dabbling
with magic awakened the elemental
with ferocious velocity.
In 1909, Mildred Darby wrote an
article for the Journal Occult
Review, describing her terrifying
ordeal. "I was standing in the
Gallery looking down at the main
floor, when I felt somebody put a
hand on my shoulder. The thing was
about the size of a sheep. Thin
guanting shadowy..., it's face was
human, to be more accurate inhuman.
Its lust in its eyes which seemed
half decomposed in black cavities
stared into mine. The horrible smell
one hundred times intensified came up
into my face, giving me a deadly
nausea. It was the smell of a
decomposing corpse."
The elemental is thought to be a
primitive ghost that attaches itself
to a particular place. It is often
malevolent, terrifying and
unpredictable. After Mrs. Darby's
experiments in the black arts, Leap
Castle has never been the same.
Haunting plague Leap leaving a
sinister air throughout the castle.
The Darbys remained at Leap until
1922. Being the home of an English
family, it became the target of the
Irish struggle for independence.
Destroyed by bombs, completely
looted, nothing but a burned out
shell remained. The Darby's were
driven out.
In the 1970's Leap Castle was
purchased by an Australian, who had a
white witch brought in from Mexico to
exorcise the castle. She spent many
hours in the bloody chapel, when she
emerged she explained that the
spirits at Leap Castle were no longer
malevolent, but they wished to
remain.
In the 1990's the castle was sold to
the current owners. They were aware
of the castle's troubled history.
Shortly after moving in they began
restoration of the castle. During
which time a "freak
accident" left the owner with a
broken kneecap delaying restoration
work on the castle for nearly a year.
One year after his
"accident" the owner was
back at work restoring his castle
when the ladder he was standing on
suddenly tilted backwards away from
the wall causing him to jump several
stories resulting in a broken ankle.
Both were strange accidents.
The owners say they would be happy to
share the castle with the spirits as
long as there are no more
"occurrences".
In 1991, in Leap Castle's Bloody
Chapel was the christening of the
owner's baby daughter. For the first
time in centuries the "Bloody
Chapel" was filled with music,
dancing, laughter, and most of all
love. The day had been a "happy,
pleasant, wonderful day". If the
troubled spirits of Leap Castle did
not leave, maybe they have finally
found some peace.

Telegraph --
Hitler
and the IRA
Nazis planned invasion of Northern
Ireland
By Gary Grattan
ggrattan@belfasttelegraph.co.uk
14 November 2003
Adolf Hitler planned to use the
IRA to invade Northern Ireland with
50,000 troops during the War, secret
papers sensationally revealed today.
But the covert Nazi plan collapsed
because of the incompetence and
treachery of republican leaders
during World War II, according to the
MI5 files made public today.
Wartime documents released to the
National Archives (formerly the
Public Record Office) show that a
German agent was sent to Ireland to
co-ordinate an operation which would
see thousands of Nazi troops land at
Larne, Londonderry and Coleraine.
But the agent found that the IRA
was riddled with informers and led by
a drunk.
In May 1940, Hermann Goertz, who
had been jailed for four years in
Britain for spying before the war,
was parachuted in to assess the
prospects for 'Plan Kathleen', as the
operation was codenamed.
It followed the visit to Germany
earlier that year of an Irish
go-between, Stephen Held, who told
German army chiefs that the IRA could
assist in an invasion.
"Held painted a rosy picture
of a powerful IRA, numbering about
5,000, ready in southern Ireland to
give the Germans immediate
assistance, provided they procured
arms," a subsequent RUC report
noted.
"The plan of campaign was
that the Germans should land 50,000
troops at about five different points
- Larne, Coleraine, Derry and Sligo
were mentioned."
However, when Goertz landed he did
not know whether he was in Northern
Ireland or the south and the first
person he asked for help turned out
to be the local "village
idiot".
Within two weeks of his landing,
Held was arrested by police at his
Dublin home where they seized
Goertz's radio transmitter, 20,000 US
dollars and his hand-written notes
for Plan Kathleen. Goertz blamed
"treachery within the small
circle which surrounded me" for
the setback.
The MI5 files reveal how he found
republicans divided on whether they
wanted the Germans to invade Northern
Ireland or just to provide the
weapons, and whether they should even
be attacking the British or
concentrating on the overthrow of
Eamon de Valera's Dublin government.
He said he did not know whom he
could trust.
He wrote: "There was
something dangerously rotten in the
organisation of the IRA. Immediately
beside the idealistic Irish fighter
for freedom, man or woman, who are
ready to die the martyr's death for
their country, stands the completely
corrupted betrayer."
The three-man team of saboteurs,
including one Briton, were captured
after they landed on Ireland's south
west coast in July 1940 and interned
in Dublin's Mountjoy jail.

Bans 'Resistance Fighters' in Iraq
News
LOS ANGELES
(Reuters) - The Los Angeles Times
has ordered its reporters to stop
describing anti-American forces in
Iraq (news - web sites) as
"resistance fighters,"
saying the term romanticizes them and
evokes World War II-era heroism.
The
ban was issued by Melissa McCoy, a
Times assistant managing editor, who
told the staff in an e-mail
circulated on Monday night that the
phrase conveyed unintended meaning
and asked them to instead use the
terms "insurgents" or
"guerrillas."
McCoy
told Reuters in an interview on
Wednesday that the memo followed a
discussion among top editors at the
paper and was not sparked by reader
complaints. The memo first surfaced
on the Web site L.A. Observed
(www.laobserved.com)
"(Times
Managing Editor) Dean Baquet and I
both individually had the same
reaction when we saw the term used in
the newspaper," McCoy said.
"Both of us felt the phrase
evoked a certain feeling, that there
was a certain romanticism or heroism
to the resistance."
McCoy
said she considered "resistance
fighters" an accurate
description of Iraqis battling
American troops, but it also evoked
World War II -- specifically the
French Resistance or Jews who fought
against Nazis in the Warsaw ghetto.
"Really,
it was something that just stopped us
when we saw it, and it was really
about the way most Americans have
come to view the words," McCoy
said.
McCoy
said she was confident that the Times
reporters who used the term had no
intention of romanticizing the Iraqis
who have killed more than 100 U.S.
soldiers since Washington declared
major combat over in May, and that
the paper's Baghdad bureau had no
objection to the policy change.
NOT
COOL OR NEUTRAL
The
policy change reflects the highly
politicized atmosphere surrounding
the war in Iraq, which has brought
charges of biased reporting from all
sides of the political spectrum.
McCoy
said she did not know how many
readers had made complaints about the
use of the term.
"We
are loath to proscribe the use of
just about any word," she said.
"But sometimes certain
combinations of words send an
unintended signal. You combine these
two seemingly innocuous words and
suddenly they have this unintended
meaning."
Allan
Siegal, assistant managing editor of
the New York Times, told Reuters that
he agreed with the decision made by
his West Coast rivals.
"We
don't have a policy but when you
mentioned the phrase it sounded like
romanticizing to me," Siegal
said. "I don't think it's the
kind of cool, neutral language we
like to see."
But
David Hoffman, foreign editor of the
Washington Post, said his paper had
used the phrase "resistance
fighters" to describe Iraqi
forces and had no objection to the
term.
"They
are resisting an American occupation
so it's not inaccurate," Hoffman
said. "We try to be as precise
as possible and distinguish whether
they are former Baath party,
Fedayeen, outsiders, insiders. But
that's not always possible."
According
to a search of the Lexis-Nexis
database, The Los Angeles Times has
employed the term "resistance
fighters" dozens of times in the
past six months, including three
references on Monday.
On
Tuesday, the day after McCoy issued
her memo, the paper used it in an
editorial, which criticized the Bush
administration for a lack of humility
and candor over Iraq.

- Mexico Clears Way for
Abduction Arrests
By MARK STEVENSON,
Associated Press Writer
MEXICO CITY - Mexico's Supreme Court
cleared the way Wednesday for the
possible arrest of former officials
implicated in the disappearance of
leftist activists in
The
court ruled that kidnappings are not
subject to the statute of
limitations, handing a victory to
prosecutors investigating Mexico's
so-called "dirty war"
against activists.
Wednesday's
unanimous ruling by a four-justice
committee of the 11-member Supreme
Court allowed arrest warrants to be
issued in the 1975 kidnapping of the
son of a renowned Mexican human
rights activist.
"The
crime of illegal deprivation of
liberty, cannot be subject to statute
of limitations ... until the victim
is freed" or found, the court
said in the ruling.
The
ruling turned the case back to a
lower court, which had refused in
April to issue arrest warrants
against police and intelligence
agents who purportedly kidnapped
Jesus Piedra Ibarra in the northern
city of Monterrey 28 years ago.
It is
up to that lower court to decide
whether the evidence warrants issuing
arrest orders.
A
special prosecutor's office created
to look into the government campaign
against leftists had asked the lower
court judge to issue warrants for
Luis de la Barreda and Miguel Nazar
Haro.
Those
men led the now-disappeared Federal
Security Directorate, an intelligence
agency, between 1970-77 and 1978-82,
respectively.
The
judge denied the request, saying a
22-year statute of limitations on the
1975 crime had run out in 1997, well
before prosecutors even began looking
into the case.
Piedra,
the alleged leader of the guerrilla
group Liga 23 de Septiembre,
disappeared in 1975 in the northern
city of Monterrey. Liga 23 de
Septiembre is credited with several
kidnappings and bank robberies in the
1970s designed to finance its
activities.
His
mother, Rosario Ibarra de la Piedra,
launched a nearly three-decade-long
crusade to bring to justice those
responsible for her son's
disappearance.
President
Vicente Fox (news - web sites) appointed a
special federal prosecutor in
November 2001 to investigate the
cases of the disappeared and the
killings of dozens of student

'The most
shameful and despicable act'
Priest blasts killers as tragic Jean
finally laid to rest
By Claire Regan
01 November 2003 THE
abduction, murder and casual disposal
of the body of IRA victim Jean
McConville was the most despicable
act executed in the history of the
Troubles, hundreds of mourners were
told at her long-awaited funeral
today.
In an emotionally-charged homily,
Monsignor Tom Toner addressed the
grieving family of the mother-of-ten
who was finally laid to rest today -
31 years after she was kidnapped,
shot and buried in an unmarked grave.
The priest told hundreds of
mourners who packed into St Paul's
Church in west Belfast for the
funeral Mass that he could think of
no other act worse than the
35-year-old mother's murder in 1972
and the subsequent wait her children
endured for the return of her body.
"It is our most shameful
example of the moral corruption and
degradation that violence generates
in the human spirit," he said.
"It not only devastated the
lives of her children but dehumanised
her murderers and stripped them of
all dignity and respect.
"While the desecration of
graves may be one of the vilest
symptoms of our sick society, it
pales into insignificance before the
desecration of human bodies."
Despite a family rift over the
funeral arrangements, Mrs
McConville's eldest daughter, Helen
McKendry, attended the funeral with
her husband Seamus and their
children.
She walked into the church minutes
before the procession arrived,
followed by Mrs McConville's eight
surviving children, other family
members and the grand-children she
never knew.
The coffin was carried inside by
the murdered woman's six sons.
Among the hundreds of mourners in
the church were SDLP leader Mark
Durkan and several party colleagues,
Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan,
Belfast Lord Mayor Martin Morgan and
Sir Kenneth Bloomfield, the
Disappeared Victims' Commissioner.
Monsignor Toner said he hoped
today's funeral and burial would
bring some comfort to the McConville
family.
Bishop of Down and Connor, the
Most Rev Patrick Walsh, renewed his
appeal for information on the
whereabouts of the bodies of the
other Disappeared, many of whose
families were represented today.
Addressing mourners, he said:
"Today, as I have done on so
many previous occasions, I make a
fervent and heartfelt plea to anyone
who can help with information.
"In God's name, in the name
of humanity, give that
information."
He added: "Every aspect of
this murder was inhuman, it touched
the depths of depravity," he
added.
"You, Jean's family, have
waited as a family for over 30 years
for this day, waited wounded and
scarred with grieving and restless
hearts."
Following the All Saints' Day
Mass, the funeral process made its
way to Divis Street, where Mrs
McConville was living when she was
kidnapped by the IRA in 1972.
Her body was discovered in a Co
Louth beach 10 weeks ago.
Burial took place at Holy Trinity
Cemetery in Lisburn, next to the
grave of her husband Arthur

EVANGELICALS AND
THE DEATH SQUADS:
OH WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE'RE WEAVING
Written By
S.R. Shearer
On the first day of September,
1991, in room 419 of the Dirksen
Senate Office Building, there was a
hearing that had been structured in
such a way as to elicit as little
public attention as possible. Experts
were on hand to speak in tones
pitched to guarantee boredom.
Committee members, typically
half-prepared and distracted, seemed
to ensure an atmosphere of monotony
and torpor. The Subcommittee on
"Terrorism, Narcotics and
International Operations" of the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee
was taking evidence on the murky and
obscure workings of the Bank of
Credit and Commerce International
(BCCI), an institution which in the
months ahead was to become known as
the "Bank of Crooks and
Spies." In various postures of
piety and relaxation were Sens. Jesse
Helms (R-NC), James Jeffords (R-VT),
Claiborne Pell (D-RI), Paul Simon
(D-IL), Alan Cranston (D-CA), and
John Kerry (D-MA), the subcommittee
chairman.
The two witnesses were Jack Blum,
a former investigator for the
subcommittee, and William von Rabb,
U.S. Customs commissioner under
Presidents Reagan and - until just
that previous month - Bush - and dull
their revelations were not. As Blum
and von Rabb got deeper and deeper
into their testimony, a number of
reporters who had shown up - more out
of habit and having nothing better to
do - began to catch one another's
eye; in the seats reserved for the
public, quiet gave way to murmurs and
even a few whistles of astonishment.
Did the Federal Reserve possess a
list of names of prominent
Washingtonians who had taken
kickbacks from BCCI? Yes, it did. Had
BCCI helped certain outlaw states
acquire American nuclear technology?
Yes, it had. Had payments been made
through BCCI to drug runners, gun
smugglers, death-squad leaders? You
bet. Had the Treasury Department
known about BCCI? Sure. What about
the Justice Department? They knew
what was up, and seemed most
concerned that no others would.[1]
The testimony which began to
slowly emerge in the weeks and months
which followed should have concerned
any evangelical with the patience to
follow the hearings; it revealed a
sinister and noxious web of
relationships which connected BCCI,
to the CIA, the State Department, the
Justice Department, the Middle East,
drug-smuggling, money-laundering, the
Contras, the Vatican, a number of
rich North American and Latin
American businessmen, Clark Clifford,
Manuel Noriega, the Calero brothers,
the Medellin Drug Cartel,
D'Aubuisson, Oliver North, Elliot
Abrams, the Death Squads, killings,
torture, "disappearances,"
etc. - essentially all those elements
which in any way had been connected
to the defeat of communism in Central
and South America. And there, in the
midst of it all, were the
evangelicals.
Many evangelicals, of course, will
say that their involvement with such
things (and people) had been worth it
- the defeat of communism in Central
and South America! But was it really?
Can any good ever come out of such
enterprises? such entanglements? -
the torture! the
"disappearances!" the
drug-smuggling! the money laundering!
etc. There is a price to be paid when
one involves himself in such things -
the defilement of one's soul; the
contamination of one's psyche; the
corruption of one's character. That's
why the Scriptures warn that it's
better for Christians - especially
when acting together as a
"community of faith" - to
suffer evil and the wrong-doing of
others than to take matters into
one's own hands and strike back -
even when they are apparently
justified in doing so, as when, for
example, the goal is the defeat of
communist subversion:
"But I say unto you, That
ye resist not evil: but whosoever
shall smite thee on thy right
cheek, turn to him the other also
... Ye have heard that it hath
been said, Thou shalt love thy
neighbor, and hate thine enemy.
But I say unto you, Love your
enemies, bless them that curse
you, do good to them that hate
you, and pray for them which
despitefully use you, and
persecute you." (Please see
Matt. 5:39-48)
But apparently that's not what a
large number of evangelicals thought!
- evidently Larry Lea didn't think
so! nor did Cubie Ward! (more about
this in upcoming journals) nor,
evidently, did the Rev. Phil
Derstein, head of Gospel Crusade,
Inc. based out of Brandenton,
Florida. Derstine is closely
associated with Oral Roberts and
various other "Seed Faith"
luminaries. Derstine is typical of
those evangelicals who, for one
reason or another, got mixed up in
the "goings-on" in Central
and South America and who, as a
result, became entangled in the CIA's
dirty little war against communism in
that area of the world in the 1970s
and '80s.[2]
Derstein told reporters at the
1987 National Religious Broadcasters
Convention in Washington DC that he
had become involved in the
"happenings" in Central
America at the behest of the National
Security Council (NSC), specifically
as a result of Oliver North's
entreaties. Derstine's assertions as
to his connection to the NSC are
supported by a November 1985 report
in a Florida newspaper, the Sarasota
Harald-Tribune, that U.S. Rep. Andy
Ireland (R-FL) had personally
accompanied Derstine to a National
Security Council briefing together
with Oliver North prior to his
September 1985 trip to the
Honduras-Nicaragua border region.[3]
North had been passing himself off
as a "Charismatic Catholic"
(and, ipso facto, a card-carrying
member of the evangelical community),
and had, as a result, earned the
endorsement of such evangelical
notables as Pat Robertson. Robertson
had described North as a
"born-again" Christian and
as a personal associate - it seems
that all it takes today to become an
evangelical is to speak in tongues,
raise one's hands at prayer meetings,
and punctuate one's speech with
"Hallelujahs" and
"Amens."[4] (Certain New
Age cults do that; does that, one
wonders, make them Christian as
well?)
Interestingly, there is no
evidence that prior to the 1980s
North had ever taken any interest -
personally or otherwise - in
evangelicalism, which has led certain
skeptics (and not just liberal ones)
to conclude that his (i.e., North's)
interest in evangelicalism had been
carefully and knowingly calibrated by
the NSC and the CIA more as a cynical
device to lure the evangelical
community into the war against
communism in Central America than
anything else. Indeed, according to
North's testimony during the Iran /
Contra hearings, Bill Casey, the
Catholic head of the CIA, had taken
the lead in this direction. North
testified that Casey was a
"dedicated Christian" who
had taken him under his wing as a
"father would a son."]
Derstine said that in meetings he
attended with North, North would
often punctuate his speech with
"Amens" and
"Hallelujahs" - indicating
that the NSC and the CIA had molded
and shaped their pupil well, and had
expertly coached him in the
vernacular of charismatic
evangelicalism. Indeed, during this
time it was not uncommon - according
to sources who had occasion to listen
in at the meetings of CIA and State
Department operatives with Death
Squad leaders and other assorted
surrogates and agents at the Contra
jungle camps in Central America - to
hear great amounts of
"Hallelujahs" and
"Amens" emanating from
those tight-knit circles. One person
described these
"gatherings" as resembling
prayer meetings more than what they
really were: the machinations of
various killers hell-bent on the
overthrow of the Sandinistas at
whatever cost to the civilian
population in blood and misery.
According to Derstine, North also
introduced him to Contra leader
Adolfo Calero and Enrique Bermudez.
Both Bermudez and Calero have been
linked through their Contra
organizations not only to Death Squad
activity, but also to drug-smuggling
operations involving the Medellin
Drug Cartel.[5] Derstine said that
North had arranged similar
introductions for other U.S. based
evangelical organizations, among
which were Pat Robertson's Christian
Broadcasting Network and Woody
Jenkins' group, Friends of the
Americas.
Derstine claims to have traveled
to Honduras and northern Nicaragua
about a dozen times for meetings with
Calero and Bermudez to "provide
the Contras with ideological
training." Derstine said,
"I've been preaching among the
Contras. They're so open to the
Gospel. We're trying to get a
chaplains' program going there. We've
brought Bibles into the Contras.
We've brought teaching tapes to the
men, and they're open for us to bring
in preachers any time we're able
to." [One cannot help but
wonder, however, what such a Gospel,
one that has been so thoroughly
politicized, can produce? - the kind
which produces converts who can
torture and kill while at the same
time singing hymns, praising God and
speaking in tongues? (Please see
summer journal for more information
on this matter)]. Derstine said that
following his return from such
missions, he would be met at the
airport by State Department and CIA
officials and debriefed - and one
cannot really suppose that the CIA
and the State Department were really
all that interested in the number of
converts to Christ Derstine's efforts
had produced. Their interest
obviously lay elsewhere and had
little to do with the Kingdom of God.
Oh, what a muddled and snarled
intrigue we as evangelicals got
ourselves mixed up in when we
involved ourselves and our churches
with the CIA and the NSC in Central
and South America. This is what
happens when Christians involve
themselves - even for the best of
reasons - in politics. Someday we
will have to explain it all - and on
"that day," we won't be
able to hide behind our contrived
excuses and painstakingly complex
obfuscations. And it's doubtful that
the One to Whom we must ultimately
answer will accept our involvement
with torture, drug-smuggling,
"disappearances," Death
Squad leaders, etc. - all our
elaborate justifications
notwithstanding. We would all be
well-advised to remember that -
Judgment begins
first with
the household of God!
