Into the Dark: Books: Johnston Brown

Reviews
Synopsis
Johnston Brown was
hailed by Martin Dillon as "the
superb investigator who was central
to bringing 'Mad Dog' Adair to
justice." According to
Dillon," ...the day [Brown]
publishes the story of life in the
RUC, from the troubled 1970s to the
1990s, a veil will be lifted from the
undercover war ..." "Into
the Dark" is that story.
Johnston Brown served in the RUC for
nearly 30 years. Recruited into the
Criminal Investigation Department
(CID) only two years into his
service, he quickly established
himself as a detective of outstanding
ability. He was to lead the
investigation into the murder of
solicitor Pat Finucane, and it was he
who was responsible for finally
bringing Johnny Adair to book. Brown
was, however, quickly to discover
that he was up against another even
more deadly enemy than the criminals
he was pursuing: those sinister
elements of RUC Special Branch who
for reasons of their own were
determined to thwart his success.
Brown found to his cost that they
would stop at nothing to do so.
"Into the Dark" offers a
gripping insight into life in the
RUC: the day-to-day reality of
policing the streets of West Belfast
during the dark days of the PIRA
hunger strike, and what it was like
to be a detective stationed in the
"killing fields" of North
Belfast during the 80s. The narrative
lays bare some of the key terrorist
personalities, as well as those
operating within the Special Branch
to pervert the course of justice as a
means of asserting internal control.

Reverend Y. Goodman Brown headed the
New Original First Church of Christ,
a sprawling megachurch with a
congregation of more than 25,000

News: Gardaí to probe arrest of
Rossiter's father

Village
- Politics, Media and Current Affairs
in Ireland - The
Rossiter
case

Brian Rossiter, a
14 year old Clonmel boy, was found in
a coma after a night in Garda
custody. He died three days later,
never having recovered consciousness.
At present an inquiry is underway
into the circumstances of his
detention and death.
Meanwhile there is
evidence of Garda harassment of the
father of Brian Rossiter, Pat
Rossiter, and of a central witness in
the case, Tony Buck, who claims to
have witnessed a named Garda strike a
heavy blow to the temple of Brian
Rossiter as he was being brought to a
cell in the Garda station some 12
hours before he was discovered in a
coma.
Tony Buck's house
has been raided on several occasions
and, according to him and his wife,
their home was ransacked by Gardaí.
On one occasion the Gardaí claimed
they were searching for a firearm.
One of Tony Buck's sons is serving a
term of imprisonment for the murder
of a Clonmel man several years ago.
Pat Rossiter, has
recently instituted a legal action
against Gardaí in Clonmel for false
imprisonment and malicious
prosecution, following his acquittal
on public order charges in early May.
The judge in that
case, Judge Terence Finn, was
critical of the Gardaí involved in
Pat Rossiter's arrest. He advised the
Gardaí to "go back to the
books". He said he had a long
memory and if further deficiencies in
Garda cases arose at Clonmel District
Court he would remember this case.
Pat Rossiter had
been charged with being drunk and a
danger to himself and others, and
with using threatening, abusive or
insulting behaviour in a public place
following an incident in May 2005.
One of the Gardaí
involved in prosecuting Pat Rossiter
was the garda in charge of the
station in Clonmel on the night Brian
Rossiter was brought to the station
and later lapsed into a coma. He
claimed in evidence he did not know
who Pat Rossiter was, nor did he
connect him to Brian Rossiter.
In the course of
the case the judge expressed
scepticism about notes gardaí
allegedly made at the time concerning
the incident involving Pat Rossiter.
He also commented on the "marked
similarity" in the evidence
given by two gardaí in the case.

Caution: Garda at work!
To people living in
the North Inner City, the Sadly, this
will not come as a surprise to anyone
who has witnessed the operations of
the Gardai when dealing with the
citizens of the city. There has
always been something of a siege
mentality amongst the enforcers of
law and order in our streets. They
appear to have little problems with
the force part, whereas their efforts
at winning respect within the
community have been negligible.
Indeed one of the Gardai that quite
visibly lost the run of himself on
the Reclaim The Streets
in May 2002, turned out to be a
community guard. Obviously on that
sunny evening, when he covered up his
numbers and flayed his baton wildly
into people, thugery came easier to
him than did his community work.
The issue is that the Gardai appear
to have precious little respect for
the people that theyre supposed
to be there to serve. Their purpose
has always been to protect the
property of the bosses, and they
appear to be able to get away with
murder after that. As long as
normality is maintained, then they
have carte-blanche to deal with the
public.
Every year there are over 1200
complaints to the Garda Siochana
Complaints Board. Many of these
dont appear to go anywhere.
Less than ten per cent appear to
reach some sort of conclusion and
they get reported in vague
bureaucratic language like they were
informally resolved at local
level. Many complaints appear
to get withdrawn or appear to be
deemed inadmissible. In
2004 the Director of Public
Prosecutions only managed to start
proceedings against a mere 3 Gardai,
in respect of just 2 complaints.
The feeling is that this is an
exercise in futility, complaining
about the cops to a board that is
made up of ex-cops who know where
they stand on the issue long before
theyve heard the any
statements.
The campaigners for Terence Wheelock
are brave. They have shone a light
into a dark corner of how the state
conducts its business and we should
all be grateful for that. The call
for an independent inquiry must be
heeded and it is about time the boys
in blue were held accountable for
their actions. That is never going to
happen in the present set up. When
the law enforcers are above the law,
justice has to be fought for.

Wheelock will not come as a surprise.

Deaths in Custody
Terence
Wheelocks death is by no means
extraordinary, in that his death was
one twenty two deaths reported in
Garda Custody since 1997. Of these
figures, a majority of those who died
are under the age of thirty, and, in
the case of Brian Rossiter, the
victim was just fourteen years old.
June
9th last saw 500 people march on
Store Street Garda station to demand
justice for Terence Wheelock on the
second anniversary of his death.
Terence, a twenty-year-old man from
Dublins north inner- city, fell
into a coma after sustaining injuries
in Store Street Station in June 2005
and subsequently died in September of
that year.
Gardai claim Terence took his own
life, but evidence gathered
independently by the Wheelock family
points toward something much more
sinister than that. What they have
proven is that Terence was forced to
endure gross brutality at the hands
of the people who are supposed to
protect and to serve us.
The reality of the situation- that
Terences only offence was to be
in the wrong place at the wrong time,
and the fact that the Gardai
responsible have so far evaded any
form of punishment for their crime
further proves that their purpose has
always been to protect private
property rather than the civil rights
of those they are paid to serve.
Getting away with murder has become
one of the things they have become
very good at.
Terences death, while
astonishing in the sheer brutality of
the facts, is by no means
extraordinary, in that his death was
one twenty two deaths reported in
Garda Custody since 1997. Of these
figures, a majority of those who died
are under the age of thirty, and, in
the case of Brian Rossiter, the
victim was just fourteen years old.
Also disquieting is the fact that
several of the deaths took place in
Store Street Garda station. This
cannot be a coincidence. Death by
hanging counted for a large number of
the deaths, though in several cases,
including in that of Terence, suicide
has proved to be almost impossible.
Brian Rossiter was found unconscious
in a cell in Clonmel Garda Station
following his arrest in Clonmel town
on 10 September 2002. He entered the
station in good health, left in a
coma and died a few days later.
Gardai told Brians father, that
he had overdosed on alcohol and
ecstasy tablets. Later toxicology
reports showed no traces of either
substance. The statutory inquiry has
always been strongly criticised by
the Rossiter family for trying to
narrow its scope, thus avoiding vital
questions.
Avoiding vital questions is what the
Garda do best. In the Rossiter case,
Garda blatantly lied to the family of
the victim. If, as the Gardai state,
Brian was heavily intoxicated, why
was there not a medic present to
provide him with a necessary check?
The boy was just fourteen years of
age. Why, in the case of Terence
Wheelock, have the Gardai continually
tried to dismiss feasible evidence?
Why were the custody records of the
station inexplicably changed
following his death?
How is it that John Maloney, found
comatose and heavily bleeding behind
a church in Rathfarnham, received
these injuries minutes
after leaving Garda custody?
These questions merely highlight the
corrupt and brutal nature of policing
in this state. Whether through death
and injury of those in Garda custody,
or those killed in the prison system,
or those other victims like John
Carthy this state violence has been
well documented.
It is of huge importance that people
support the campaigns of the
Wheelocks, Moloneys and other
families seeking justice. Organised
opposition can hopefully save more
lives and create an atmosphere where
people can begin working on community
alternatives to the states hard
line force. An injustice to one is
and injustice to all!

MP could have been saved
MP 'sacrificed to protect agents
within ranks of the provisionals'
Sunday, April 15,
2007

In the third part
of our explosive series The Special
Branch Files, journalist Greg Harkin
reveals how a botched undercover
operation led to the murder of the
Rev Robert Bradford Shortly before
11.30am on Saturday, November 14,
1981, three armed IRA members
carrying ladders and dressed in
painters' boilersuits arrived at the
community centre at Benmore Drive in
Finaghy. At first their arrival did
not arouse suspicion; there was
ongoing work at the centre. One of
the gang members, carrying a
sub-machine-gun, took up position at
the front door. One of his
accomplices shouted
"freeze" before opening
fire on the caretaker, 29-year-old
Kenneth Campbell, who was returning
to the centre after a break at his
nearby home. While one of the IRA men
pinned an RUC bodyguard to the ground
at gunpoint, another gunman quickly
turned to the Reverend Robert
Bradford, Ulster Unionist MP for
South Belfast. He opened fire,
shooting him in the eye, chest, neck
and ear.
The 40-year-old
father-of-one died instantly. As the
IRA's active service unit (ASU) fled,
the RUC officer fired three shots
after their getaway car. It was
another horrific day in a
blood-spattered year in which 117
people lost their lives in the
Troubles - 1981, the year of the
hunger strikes. Today, however, 26
years later, Sunday Life can reveal
that neither Rev Bradford nor Mr
Campbell should have died in the IRA
attack - RUC Special Branch and Army
Intelligence had prior knowledge of
the incident an incredible THREE DAYS
beforehand.
They told neither
the Rev Bradford, nor his police
protection officer.
(I wonder
about the policeman! Why didnt the
IRA shoot the RUC officer? Surely he
would have been a prime target for
the IRA! If British Intelligence were
involved, could they have colluded
with the IRA in this murder? The
possible motive could have been that
there was something of immense
importance, which both British and
IRA were afraid that Rev Bradford
might have exposed! This could have
been the fact that upper-class
Satanic cult were active in both
Unionist/Anglo-Irish in Ulster and
upper-class Republican society in the
Republic of Ireland!)
Three years ago, a
former officer with the shadowy Army
intelligence-gathering outfit the
Force Research Unit (FRU) contacted
me with information on several
murders which took place during the
Troubles. He knew of - but did not
know - 'Martin Ingram', another
former FRU officer. He hinted at a
cover-up in the murder of the Ulster
Unionist MP in 1981.
Now, for the first
time, he has decided to tell the
whole story.
I have since been
able to verify these claims with two
other sources not known to each
other.
"The Rev
Bradford was a sitting duck. The IRA
had checked out the (community)
centre before as a possible venue for
a hit," said the source.
"He had
certainly been warned that he had to
be extra careful when he was there,
but the information before the
shooting was 100pc certain that an
attack would take place that
Saturday, November 14.
"This was not
a general warning. We had someone in
the IRA giving us information on the
planned attack.
"I know for a
fact that Special Branch also had
someone inside giving them the same
information."
The ex-officer
claims he had spent that weekend
expecting to hear about the arrests
or shootings of IRA members.
"I couldn't
believe it when the MP was taken out
along with another civilian," he
recalled.
"I made a
point of finding out what went wrong.
Our lot had put a great deal into
this intelligence operation and I
know Special Branch did, too.
"All the
information was passed up (the chain
of command), but nothing happened. I
know that teams were prepared by the
RUC to intercept the IRA team, but
they were still on their way (to
Finaghy) when the murders took place.
They were too late. It was
mind-boggling. "But they
shouldn't have been too late. They
(the RUC) knew for three f*****g days
what was going to happen, but there
was no operation put in place around
the IRA team as they set off from
Andersonstown, there was no operation
put in place around Mr Bradford or
his home on the Malone Road, and the
operation for the community centre
was still leaving the station when
the murders took place.
"It defies
belief that this could have happened,
but it did. Army Intelligence would
have had people on the ground the
night before, for God's sake."
But how could such
a monumental mistake take place?
Branch sources say
officers at the time were also
furious that the Rev Bradford had not
been saved, but put the incident down
to poor planning and incompetence
rather than any more sinister reason.
The former soldier
however said he believed that now was
the time for information on the
murder to be investigated - believing
there could have been other reasons.
"I believe the
hit went ahead to save agents'
lives," he claimed.
He admitted that he
had "no evidence
whatsoever" to substantiate this
claim, but insisted: "I find it
hard to believe any other reason.
"This is not
just about Mr Bradford, either. There
was also Mr Campbell who died and at
least three Catholics were killed by
loyalists in retaliation in the days
after the killing."
Just hours after
the Bradford murder, Stephen Murphy
(19) was shot by a UVF gunman as he
answered his door in the Oldpark area
of north Belfast. He died from his
injuries 10 days later.
Thomas McNulty (18)
was murdered by the UVF as he walked
home in the Short Strand area of east
Belfast the day after the Bradford
murder.
Two days later,
Billy Wright, then UVF leader in
Mid-Ulster, shot dead 20-year-old
Catholic Peader Fegan in Lurgan.
When the MP and Mr
Campbell were shot, children at a
kids' disco witnessed the horrific
murders.
A 15-year-old DJ
described how he threw a chair at one
of the killers while shouting at
other children to dive for cover.
"The gunmen
pushed the children out of the way as
they made their way out of the
building," he added.
An 11-year-old told
reporters afterwards: "They shot
the Rev Bradford about six times. We
were quite close by. The shots were
very loud."
The murders were
widely condemned.
TDs in Dail Eireann
stood for a minute's silence, but in
Northern Ireland there were fears of
an all-out civil war.
The SDLP leader,
John Hume, said the murder was a
deliberate attempt by the IRA to
provoke the community into civil
conflict.
Unionists reacted
with anger. UUP leader James
Molyneaux threatened a 'Third Force'
if the Secretary of State, Jim Prior,
did not announce a 'crackdown' on the
paramilitaries.
At the Rev
Bradford's funeral, Mr Prior was
jostled by dozens of mourners. He
recalled afterwards: "I had to
make a run for the church door with
my detectives shielding me. I just
about managed to get through in one
piece. "
Heckled
He was later
heckled inside the church and as he
left afterwards he was jostled again
by crowds shouting: "Kill him!
Kill him!"
Earlier, mourners
cheered and applauded when the
minister conducting the funeral
service called for the reintroduction
of capital punishment.
The IRA admitted
responsibility for the murders just
hours after the killings.
The Provisionals'
statement read: "Belfast Brigade
IRA claims responsibility for the
execution of Robert Bradford MP, one
of the key people responsible for
winding up the loyalist paramilitary
sectarian machine in the North.
"Let Mr Tyrie
(UDA leader) and the UDA know well
the cost of killing innocent
nationalist people."
The Rev Bradford
had become a Methodist minister when
he was 22, turning his back on a
career as a professional footballer
with Sheffield Wednesday.
He joined the UUP
when he served as a minister in the
loyalist enclave of Suffolk in west
Belfast and was elected MP for south
Belfast in 1974.
He became an
outspoken critic of the IRA and had
demanded the reintroduction of
hanging for terrorist killers.
The Rev Bradford's
widow, Norah, was 33 at the time of
the killing. They had one daughter,
Claire.
Speaking after the
murder, she told reporters:
"They have tried several times
at the advice centre. They came at
least two times before and they were
caught out watching the advice
centre, but he would not give it up
just for them.
"He knew it
would be the most likely place for
them to get him.
"He never
feared he would be attacked. He felt
it was a possibility. He did not fear
it."
It is clear from
other interviews at the time that the
Rev Bradford knew he was a target for
the Provisionals.
He also knew the
centre in Finaghy where he attended
clinics at least once a month was a
place where an attack could take
place.
What makes the
claims from a former Army officer
more serious is the fact that the
security forces knew an attempted
murder was going to take place on the
morning of November 14, 1981 and
appeared to do very little to prevent
it.
They know who was
in the gang, who was providing
support and various other details.
What is clear is
that the gang would not stop at these
murders. The gun used to kill the Rev
Bradford was also used to shoot Judge
William Doyle and Mary Travers
several years later.
"Northern
Ireland has to move on, but I don't
think that is possible until we have
dealt with the past," said the
ex-FRU officer.
"I believe
there has to be a lawyer-free truth
and reconciliation tribunal where
everyone makes statements about the
past.
"Police
officers, for example, are allowed
under the law to waive the
restrictions of the Official Secrets
Act when they talk to the Police
Ombudsman. "A tribunal could
offer an amnesty to all participants
- security forces and paramilitaries
- and a way forward that doesn't
involved expensive investigation and
legal fees."
Today's revelations
will certainly lead to calls for
inquiries.
Mrs Bradford said
of her husband's killers at the time:
"The Lord will deal with them in
his own good time. It is not for me
to speak of that."

Pentagon Cover
Up
15,000
or More US Deaths in Iraq War?
By MIKE WHITNEY
The Pentagon has been
concealing the true number of
American casualties in the Iraq War.
The real number exceeds 15,000 and
CBS News can prove it.
CBS's Investigative Unit wanted to do
a report on the number of suicides in
the military and "submitted a
Freedom of Information Act request to
the Department of Defense".
After 4 months they received a
document which showed--that between
1995 and 2007-- there were 2,200
suicides among "active
duty" soldiers.
Baloney.
The Pentagon was covering up the real
magnitude of the "suicide
epidemic". Following an
exhaustive investigation of veterans'
suicide data collected from 45
states; CBS discovered that in 2005
alone "there were at least 6,256
among those who served in the armed
forces. That's 120 each and every
week in just one year."
That
is not a typo. Active and retired
military personnel, mostly young
veterans between the ages of 20 to
24, are returning from combat and
killing themselves in record numbers.
We can assume that
"multiple-tours of duty" in
a war-zone have precipitated a mental
health crisis of which the public is
entirely unaware and which the
Pentagon is in total denial.
If we add the 6,256 suicide victims
from 2005 to the "official"
3,865 reported combat casualties; we
get a sum of 10,121. Even a low-ball
estimate of similar 2004 and 2006
suicide figures, would mean that the
total number of US casualties from
the Iraq war now exceed 15,000.
That's right; 15,000 dead US
servicemen and women in a war
that--as yet--has no legal or moral
justification.
CBS interviewed Dr. Ira Katz, the
head of mental health at the
Department of Veteran Affairs. Katz
attempted to minimize the surge in
veteran suicides saying, "There
is no epidemic of suicide in the VA,
but suicide is a major problem."
Maybe Katz is right. Maybe there is
no epidemic. Maybe it's perfectly
normal for young men and women to
return from combat, sink into
inconsolable depression, and kill
themselves at greater rates than they
were dying on the battlefield. Maybe
it's normal for the Pentagon to
abandon them as soon as soon they
return from their mission so they can
blow their brains out or hang
themselves with a garden hose in
their basement. Maybe it's normal for
politicians to keep funding wholesale
slaughter while they brush aside the
casualties they have produced by
their callousness and lack of
courage. Maybe it is normal for the
president to persist with the same,
bland lies that perpetuate the
occupation and continue to kill
scores of young soldiers who put
themselves in harm's-way for their
country.
It's not normal; it's is a
pandemic---an outbreak of despair
which is the natural corollary of
living in constant fear; of seeing
one's friends being dismembered by
roadside bombs or children being
blasted to bits at military
checkpoints or finding battered
bodies dumped on the side of a
riverbed like a bag of garbage.
The rash of suicides is the logical
upshot of the U.S. war on Iraq.
Returning soldiers are traumatized by
their experience and now they are
killing themselves in droves. Maybe
we should have thought about that
before we invaded.
